This way of connecting is reasonably straight forward and a cheaper option than buying 2 radios and a HRI-200. The radio in combination with the PC software acts as a HRI-200 and allows you to change room on the PC and then talk into the radio.

Getting things ready

Using the WIRES-X Portable Digital Node function, you can operate a WIRES-X digital node station by directly connecting a Portable Digital Node capable C4FM digital transceiver with the PC. The HRI-200 Internet interface kit is not needed, and no fixed or dynamic global IP address is required.

There are some slightly different variations, which are covered below

FTM-300, FTM-100 & FTM-400 = USB lead SCU-20

FT2D & FT3D = USB lead SCU-19

SCU lead information

Download cable driver
Download WIRES-X PC program

Once you have installed the Driver for the USB lead – go ahead and install the WIRES-X software on your PC

On Yaesu’s website look for this section under the files tab

Then put the radio in to the relevant mode

You are likely to get a “Windows Firewall” notice just click “Allow access”

To check your com port open the search in windows Which is the magnifying glass bottom left Then type in “device” and then click device manager.

The Radio (ft2d or ft3d) will need to be connected to the PC by the SCU-39 kit, or SCU-19, without this it will not work. I have said a laptop above but this can be any PC, a laptop tethered (connected) to your mobile phone would make this a setup that you can walk around with or at least setup somewhere other than your QTH.

Portable HRI mode

This mode removes the need for using a HRI-200; but you will still need two compatible C4FM radios.
The radio that connects to the laptop functions like a HRI-200.

FT2D & FT3D

Press and hold the [X] key, [back] key and the POWER switch to turn ON – WIRES-X is displayed on the LCD screen

FTM-400 & FTM-100

Press and hold the [DX] key [GM] key and the POWER switch to turn on the transceiver – WIRES-X logo is displayed on the LCD screen

To turn off any mode – switch radio off and repeat the above steps
